Several residents, including 10 youngsters who had signed a petition, addressed the governing body before the vote. Among them was 8-year-old Alex Burgess who started the petition to bring ice cream sales on wheels back to the town. “I don’t understand why ice cream trucks were abandoned. The traffic is not that big of a deal,” she said. “I think it’s a great idea because kids love ice cream and everyone likes a nice summer treat every once in a while.”
Although a majority of those spoke in favor of lifting the ban. Some had serious concerns. “It’s a diabetes truck,” said Gregory Nowell of Mohegan Road. “It taunts people struggling with weight control and diabetes. It’s bad public health policy,” he continued adding, “Why not have trucks distribute drugs and alcohol?”
